Kilmartin Castle was originally built in 1550 for John Carswell, Rector of Kilmartin Glen and later Bishop of The Isles, where he lived for around 15 years before moving to his new residence at Carnasserie Castle (now ruined), just 1.5 miles north of Kilmartin. Kilmartin Castle sits at the top of Kilmartin Glen, which boasts 8,000 years of history. Burial cairns and standing stones are all within walking distance of the castle, as is Kilmartin Museum, which has just received funding to expand due to the large number of recent and regular finds in the area.

Kilmartin Castle, a small late 16th century fortalice, is now roofless and in poor condition. It is of Z-plan consisting of a main block lying N-S with round towers at the NE and SW angles. A small secondary stair-tower also rises part-way along the W front.
