He wrote the song "Strange Fruit" about lynching that became one of the most important songs of the Abel Meeropol (February 10, 1903 – October 30, 1986) was an American writer, teacher and song-writer, whose works were published under his pseudonym Lewis Allan. His best-known song is Strange Fruit (1937), especially as recorded by Billie Holiday. He and his wife Anne cared for and adopted Michael and Robert, the two young sons of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were orphaned after their Strange Fruit is a song performed most famously by Billie Holiday, who first sang and recorded it in 1939. Written by the teacher Abel Meeropol as a poem, it exposed American racism, particularly Abel Meeropol (1903-1986) was his name, a first generation Jewish New Yorker who worked as a teacher, union activist, lyricist, and screenwriter. He was also a Communist Party member at a time when the party was one of the few white-dominated organizations campaigning for civil rights.

The poet presents an image of a tree that bears strange fruit. The symbolic tree has blood on the leaves and in its root. NPR noted that in the late 1930s white poet, activist, and Bronx school teacher Abel Meeropol remained haunted by the image of “strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees” and penned a poem about the lynching, published by the teacher’s union. Abel Meeropol was a member of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) – but not in 1937 when he wrote “Bitter Fruit” (Billie Holiday first sang it two years later, as “Strange Fruit” and it became a signature song.) The UFT did not yet exist. Meeropol was a member of the Communist-led New York Teachers Union (TU).

‘Strange Fruit’ by Abel Meeropol is a poem on the genocide of black people in America. The tragic effect gets embodiment in the poem by the use of Meeropol’s bitter irony. The poet presents an image of a tree that bears strange fruit.
